With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with views of the medieval city of Angers, located on the River Maine close to its confluence with the Loire. The towered structure at the centre of the page has been identified as the Hôtel du Roi de Pologne.1 Turner made extensive study of Angers in this volume. A list of his drawings of the city is provided in the sketchbook introduction.
