With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a depiction of the city of Coutances in Normandy. The cathedral can be seen at the centre of the page. Multiple pages in this volume feature sketches of this settlement and its monuments, a list of which is included in the sketchbook introduction. The sketch continues onto folio 53 recto (D23437; Turner Bequest CCL 53).
