Turner filled much of this page with a study of the densely-packed buildings of Caen in Normandy. A.J. Finberg identified the church at the centre of the scene as the Church of Saint-Pierre in his 1909 Inventory of the Turner Bequest.1 The artist filled several pages of the present volume with studies of Caen, a list of which is included in the sketchbook introduction.
