The date and occasion of this slight pencil sketch of the riverbank at Saint-Cloud are not known. However, Turner specialist Ian Warrell has speculated that it may record an otherwise undocumented expedition from nearby Paris during the 1826 tour.1 See the Introduction to this section for a list of comparable studies of this site.

Technical Notes:
The sheet is attached to D20480 (Turner Bequest CCXXIV 174) along the bottom edge, from which it is divided by a horizontal crease. There are brown stains, creasing, and a tear down the left-hand edge of the sheet.
Verso:
The sheet bears John Ruskin’s red ink note ‘173’ in the bottom right-hand corner. Immediately to the left of this is a pencil note ‘235 | o’ red ink ‘51’. There a short dashes of red and black chalk towards the right-hand edge.
