This pencil sketch depicts the Château of Angers rising about the surrounding buildings. The Moulin Tower features prominently on the skyline. This is one of several pencil sketches on blue paper which Turner made of this city on the 1826 tour.1 See the Introduction to this section for a list of comparable studies of these.

Technical Notes:
This sketch occupies half of a piece of blue paper which was folded in two. It is attached along its bottom edge to D20526 (Turner Bequest CCXXIV 213). It once formed part of a larger sheet with D20516 and D20517 (Turner Bequest CCXXIV 204,205).1 The sheet belongs to a batch of blue paper used by Turner made by George Steart of Bally, Ellen and Steart at De Montault Mill, Coombe Down, Bath.2

Inscribed in red ink ‘212’ in the bottom right-hand corner of the sheet. Inscribed in pencil with the note ‘D. 20525 / 6’ in the bottom left-hand corner of the sheet and ‘235 | o’ in the bottom right-hand corner.
