Turner based this depiction of the feudal castle at Varades near the abbey of St-Florent-le-Vieil on a pencil sketch he made from the River Loire in the Nantes, Angers and Saumur sketchbook of 1826; see entry for Tate D23186 (Turner Bequest CCXLVIII 19).1
