Like the other rapid sketches in this book, this relates to the arrival of Louis-Philippe, King of the French, at Portsmouth Harbour on 8 October 1844, as discussed in the Introductions to the sketchbook and the overall section. The yacht may be off Southsea Castle, south-east of the harbour; compare views perhaps made in the summer of 1824 in the London Bridge and Portsmouth sketchbook (Tate D17920, D17926; Turner Bequest CCVI 4a, 7a), and in the 1827 Isle of Wight sketchbook (Tate D20788; Turner Bequest CCXXVII 35a).
The significance of the loose marks towards the bottom left is unclear in relation to the rest of the drawing.
