Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, on the right is apparently a quick study of a sailing boat or boats. The other way up towards the top left is a continuation of the rough skyline on folio 21 recto opposite (D35723), probably showing Portsmouth; see the sketchbook’s Introduction for other views.
Like the other rapid sketches in this book these presumably relate to the arrival of Louis-Philippe, King of the French, at Portsmouth Harbour on 8 October 1844, as discussed in the Introductions to the sketchbook and the overall section.
