The view continues across folio 16 recto opposite (D14517), where the view is west from the Bacino across the start of the Giudecca Canal, with the Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute. Here the scene continues south-west across to the Giudecca, with the dome of the church of the Redentore and the campanile of the adjacent church of San Giacomo, which was suppressed in 1806 and demolished in 1837.1
The subject relates closely to the more detailed rendering in the contemporary Milan to Venice sketchbook (Tate D14338–D14339; Turner Bequest CLXXV 64a–65). For other drawings made in the vicinity, see the sketchbook’s Introduction.
