Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this view with a bridge, a tower and buildings including what appear to be fortifications beyond, falls among clearly identifiable views of Bologna (see under folio 24 recto; D14532), but may represent one of the smaller towns or cities in the vicinity; some of the sites on his overall southward route in this sketchbook do not appear in quite the order he would have encountered them, and he appears to have used the book slightly haphazardly at times.
Finberg noted of the pages he designated Turner Bequest CLXXVI 26a–h (D14535D14542): ‘The following four leaves were found loose, but appear to belong here.’1 Their presence as now bound at this stage of the sketchbook affects its foliation sequence compared to Finberg’s numbering; see the concordance in the Introduction.
