Finberg subsequently annotated his 1909 Inventory entry (‘S. Maria della Salute and Seminario Patriarcale’), inserting ‘& Dogana & Entrance Gd Canal’ after ‘Salute’, and revising the overall title as ‘Salute & Dogana, from S. Giorgio, with P. Corner della Ca Grande in m.-d.’ 1 In another copy he wrote: ‘Dogana. Gd Hotel’.2 The Turner scholar C.F. Bell annotated a further copy: ‘from entrance to the Giudecca’.3
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the view is west from the Bacino with shipping moored off the Dogana below the domes of Santa Maria della Salute. To the right the Grand Canal recedes, with the campanile of San Stefano on the right.
The drawing is actually left-hand part of a three-page panorama, albeit which is effectively impossible to view all at once. It continues on folios 56 verso and 57 verso (D14422, D14424),4 encompassing a view ranging from the north-west to the north-east, centred on the Doge’s Palace. Turner would have had to roll or almost fold back each page successively so that its outer edge would meet the preceding gutter, where the architecture matches precisely in each case.
For other drawings made in the vicinity and an overview of Turner’s coverage of Venice, see the sketchbook’s Introduction.
