Here Turner has drawn the Saxon city of Dresden in two views, each rendered inversely to one another. The scene parallel to the gutter of the sketchbook depicts the Zwinger, a complex of baroque palaces arranged around a courtyard and formal gardens. It was used by the imperial court as an exhibition gallery, orangery and venue for parties. Turner depicts the Zwinger from beyond the Moat, with the Hofkirche and Schloss beyond. The second sketch is largely the same view, and part of it is continued at top right. The Crown Gate, the Zwinger’s ceremonial entranceway topped with a giant crown decorated with gilt motifs, is rendered towards the base of the moat at right.
