Here Turner has rendered three sketches of the medieval castle on Schlossberg hill at Teplitz (modern day Teplice in the Czech Republic). Schlossberg is known as Doubravka Hill in Czech.
The views are rendered inversely relative to one another; Turner has inscribed what appears to read ‘Slushburg’ at bottom left, presumably to signify ‘Schlossberg’. See also Tate D30326–D30331; Turner Bequest CCCI 16–18a.
