This is a view of the Bohemian capital Prague, taken from the forecourt of Prague Castle. From there Turner was able to sketch the church spires, towers, domes and rooftops to the east and south of the Hradcany district, rendering the southerly view in a separate squared-off sketch (inscribed ‘2’) above the easterly view.
Other drawings of Prague can be found at Tate D30344–D30361, D30364–D30366; Turner Bequest CCCI 25–33a, 36–37.
