These are sketches of the Festung Königstein, a sandstone fortress built into a plateau of the same name. The fortress, overlooking the River Elbe, was a residence of the Electors and Kings of Saxony and later a state prison.1 The stronghold is shown again on Tate D30931–D30947, D30949; Turner Bequest CCCVI 24a–32a, 33a.
