The principal view shows Berlin looking towards the Königskolonnaden (The King’s Colonnade) at centre and the Church of St Mary at right. The Königskolonnaden is recorded again in more detail on Tate D31055–D31056; Turner Bequest CCCVII 18a–19.1 Turner has inscribed a note which appears to read ‘Carts for Hire’ at the rear of the sketch. The second view, orientated inversely to the principal sketch and rendered parallel to the gutter of the sketchbook, depicts boats and figures on the quayside of the River Spree.
For other sketches of Berlin see Tate D21045–D31082; Turner Bequest CCCVII 13a–32.
