This is a view of Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt with the Schauspielhaus theatre (left) and the French Church (right). Turner has annotated the sketch with various notes: at bottom left ‘Place L[...] M[...]’ which may refer to the Gendarmenmarkt’s historic name ‘Linden-Markt’. At rear the inscriptions ‘Rustic’, ‘6’, ‘7’, ‘Cart’, ‘26’ (on the steps of the Schauspielhaus), ‘Ionic’ and ‘Market’ are visible. At right: ‘W on Cloud’ and ‘C and dog’ are inscribed. In the remaining space surrounding the view the artist has also rendered jottings of architectural details and figures.
For other sketches of Berlin see Tate D21045–D31082; Turner Bequest CCCVII 13a–32.
