This sketch was taken on the Rhine as Turner passed the riverside town of Bingen. The view shows two nearby fortifications, the Mäuseturm and Burg Ehrenfels, erected by the Archbishopric of Mainz to protect territories and collect taxes. A separate sketch of the Mäuseturm is at rear.
