This is a view of Frankfurt’s Old Bridge or Alte Brücke, which crosses the River Main in the heart of the city. A small river island known as the Maininsel lies directly beneath the bridge, situated closer to the Sachsenhausen side of the Main (pictured left). Though the Maininsel is not clearly visible in this sketch, the two old mills at either side of the bridge’s balustrade can be seen. Frankfurt Cathedral is roughly marked out in profile at far right and depicted again in the sketch above the bridge.
