This view of the city Nuremberg in Germany was taken from the Maxbrücke, a bridge in the city centre linking the north and south banks of the Pegnitz River. From there Turner was afforded views of some of Nuremberg’s medieval riverside architecture, including the Weinstadel and the adjacent Wasserturm (water tower) at left. The Wasserturm marks the beginning of the Henkersteg, a stone arched bridge named after the small tower visible at centre called the Henkerturm or Hangman’s Tower. Right of the Henkerturm is a wooden footbridge which leads to Trödelmarkt. Beyond can be seen the spires of St Lorenz Church.
