The larger of the two sketches rendered here shows Prague. Turner has captured a view down the Vltava River, which flows through the centre of the city, from a vantage point on Petrín Hill. St Lawrence’s Church on the Hill can be seen at far left (see Tate D30771; Turner Bequest CCCIV 74).
The second, more cursory sketch is of Cologne and shows the cathedral at right and a bridge of boats running across the Rhine at left. For more sketches of the city see Tate D30762–D30763, D30766, D30770, D30772, D30774, D30778; Turner Bequest CCCIV 70–70a, 71a, 73a, 74a, 75a, 77a.
