These sketches depict the cliffs at Møn, an island in south-eastern Denmark. Turner passed the eastern side of Møn on his journey by boat from Kiel, the harbour north of Hamburg. Cecilia Powell writes that the artist departed Kiel for Copenhagen at 7.30 pm on Saturday 5 September, and ‘it must have been around dawn’ when Turner saw Møn.1 ‘Moen’ is inscribed at bottom centre.
