These are slight sketches of the island of Møn (inscribed ‘Moen’), located is south-eastern Denmark (see Tate D30830–D30831; Turner Bequest CCCV 5a–6).
Turner travelled past Møn on his way from Kiel to Copenhagen from 5–6 September 1835. Views of Copenhagen are rendered parallel to the gutter of the sketchbook. They show Rosenborg Castle, a renaissance palace built in 1606 as the summerhouse of Christian IV.1 Turner draws Rosenborg from a vantage point just outside the palace’s main entrance on the Øster Voldgade.
