The principal sketch depicts Rotterdam’s Haringvliet, one of the eastern ports named after herring ships that used to dock there. Windmills and shipping can be seen. Below this view is a rough sketch of Boompjes, a promenade overlooking the right bank of the New Maas in Rotterdam. The final sketch at bottom right shows the façade of Rotterdam’s English Church, dedicated to St Mary and located on the Haringvliet. As the name suggests, this church served the community of English settlers in the city, many of whom were textile merchants.
