This sketch shows Brielle (known as Brill in English), an historic town and seaport in South Holland. The view is rendered in two parts: Brielle and the Church of St Catherine are at centre with coastline to the east of the town at rear. With loose scalloped line and swift hatching, Turner suggests stormy skies and rainfall. Brielle’s western coastline is depicted on Tate D32535
Turner Bequest CCCXXI 54a. See also Tate D32476; Turner Bequest CCCXXI 17.
