Here Turner depicts Rotterdam’s Ooster Oude Hooft-Poort, or Old City Gate, situated on the eastern side of the Oude Haven (Old Port). The Gate is rendered in outline at centre right, with the tower of St Lawrence’s Church in the distance at left. A more detailed representation of the building is found on the folio opposite (Tate D32489; Turner Bequest CCCXXI 24). Vessels with tall masts are stacked on the waterway in front of the Oude Hooft-Poort, and a few figures are marked out on the quayside.
