This rough sketch shows shipping in front of the Ooster Oude Hooft-Poort, the eastern gate to the old port of Rotterdam (see Tate D32489; Turner Bequest CCCXXI 24). Visible in the foreground is the landing stage for shipping to Dort, Middleburg and Brielle. The bank of the New Maas (Meuse) is continued at top right.
