Lillebonne Castle ?1829

Turner Bequest CCLIII 38a
Pencil on pale cream laid paper, 107 x 156 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The page contains a rough sketch, drawn horizontally; in a few sparse lines, Turner manages to convey a ruined castle in a hilly landscape. Finberg noted it simply as a ‘Ruined castle’,1 but the location of Lillebonne has been confirmed.2 The shapes of the castle buildings render them identifiable. (For further information on the castle, see under folio 28 recto, D23752.)

There are dark brown smudges on the left edge, and a slighter brownish spot just below centre, of the page. There is a slight thumbprint at lower right of the page.
