The page contains a rough sketch, drawn horizontally, of a view over a river meandering through a landscape. Finberg noted it simply as ‘Distant river’.1 The recto (D23854) appears to show the town Saint-Aubin-lès-Elbeuf, located on a meander of the River Seine, 12 miles (or 19 kilometres) south of Rouen, and this would suggest a similar location for this sketch. Turner indicates the expansive view in a few rough lines.
