With the page turned horizontally and the gutter at the top, Turner made a slight sketch at the centre left, showing somewhat nondescript buildings. With suggestions of a waterfront setting, they are on the same scale as those shown in the view of what seems to be the lost campanile of the church of Santa Marta on folio 7 verso opposite (D31290); the present drawing may be a disjointed continuation from the right-hand side of the other, presumably taken from the Canale della Giudecca or around the Punta di Santa Marta. This is one of a short sequence of views on the canal (folios 6 verso–9 recto; D31288–D31293).1
As noted in the sketchbook’s Introduction, the Venice views on its early pages are intermingled with German sketches from Turner’s return journey. The other way up, in the outer half of the page, is a view north up to Schloss Rosenau, near Coburg (see under folio 1 verso; D31278), from the wooded valley of the River Itz, with a bridge and garden pavilion. The subject was identified by Finberg2 and confirmed by Cecilia Powell.3 For the few views of the castle in this sketchbook and related works, see under folio 22 recto (D31318).
