With the page turned horizontally, the view is west from Wörtherstrasse to the middle of Donaustauf, with the spire of St Michael’s Church below the ruins of the castle; below to the left is the River Danube. Cecilia Powell identified the subject, noting that the viewpoint is ‘the same spot’ as that used for the view east on folio 36 verso opposite (D31347);1 heavy criss-cross railings are still to be seen along the street.
For numerous contemporary views of Donaustauf, and the adjacent St Salvator’s Church and the Walhalla memorial in this sketchbook and elsewhere, see under folio 33 verso (D31341);2 for nearby Regensburg, see under folio 18 verso (D31311).3
