As Cecilia Powell recognised,1 this horizontal drawing shows the view from the west up to the ruins of Burg Hals beyond houses in the upper part of the village, climbing the narrow neck of land surrounded by a tight meander of the River Ilz, looking downstream at this point; compare folio 63 verso (D31401). The crag and castle are now somewhat softened by vegetation. There is a loose detail of part of the castle at the top right.
For numerous contemporary views of Hals and the ruins on adjacent pages of this sketchbook and elsewhere, see under folio 58 verso (D31391).
