The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally. It shows a group of horse-drawn carriages seemingly gathered on a beach or quayside, likely at Dover, as discussed under the view of Dover Castle from the sea on folio 14 recto opposite (D30483; CCCIII 13). Such scenes were no doubt familiar at either end of Turner’s Continental tours; compare a similar gathering near the steamer jetty among drawings of the beach at Margate (Tate D29014; Turner Bequest CCXCII 63) and see also Tate D24790 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 225).
This subject and a few others fall within a sequence of coastal views at Ostend, marking the end of Turner’s long Continental itinerary; see under folio 1 recto (D30460).1
