This prospect of Würzburg, made with the page turned horizontally, was identified by Cecilia Powell.1 The viewpoint is the hillside near St Burkard’s Church below the Marienberg fortress on the west bank of the River Main, looking north-west with the Alte Mainbrücke above the lightly indicated weir on the left. On the opposite bank are arrayed the Baroque spire of the Marienkapelle (since rebuilt in Gothic Revival style), the tower and slim spire of the Rathaus, the dome of the Neumünster and the four spires of the cathedral to its east.
For the extensive sequence of Würzburg views in this sketchbook and others elsewhere, see under folio 72 verso (D30596; CCCIII 71).
