Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner has briefly used the flap of the integral pocket for what appears to be an ad hoc financial note. There are similarly rapid notes on folio 1 recto opposite (D32263).
Otherwise this endpaper is blank save for the Turner Bequest executors’ endorsement at the top right, with the main ink inscription signed by Charles Turner: ‘No 351. Contains | 89 Pencil Sketches | all on both sides | C Turner’; below are the pencil initials, ‘C.L.E.’ and ‘JPK’, of Charles Lock Eastlake and John Prescott Knight.
Technical notes:
The page is somewhat stained towards the gutter, possibly as a result of the 1928 Tate Gallery flood.
Turner’s inscription is on a flap with a slightly scalloped long edge, 140 x 36 mm, hinged at the fore-edge of the cover, and made from buff card faced with the same wove paper used for the endpaper (washed with pale green). The endpaper is laminated over blue wove paper forming a bellows-type pocket with brown cloth hinges. There is a similar pocket inside the back cover (D41031).
