With the page turned horizontally, the view is south up the River Inn at Landeck in the Austrian Tyrol, with Schloss Landeck high up in the background. There are views from the west on folio 17 recto opposite and folio 31 verso (D32295, D32322). There are two contemporary watercolour studies from similar viewpoints (Tate D36079, D36173; Turner Bequest CCCLXIV 233, 315) and two looking the other way along the river past the castle (D36085, D36168; CCCLXIV 239, 310); all are tinted over detailed pencil work, indicating that they were at least begun on the spot, independently of the relatively slight sketches in the present book.
A long sequence of sketches, mostly characterised as ‘Mountains’ by Finberg (with occasional identifications and transcriptions of the place names marked by the artist), lies between folios 7 recto and 76 recto (D32275–D32411).1 See the sketchbook’s Introduction for the likely overall route between Bregenz and Venice.2
