There are four rapid mountain views here, one above the other including two with slight outlines of buildings; the bottom one is inverted, and Finberg later annotated his 1909 Inventory entry including his reading of Turner’s note (‘“Lago St. Croce.”’): ‘btwn Belluno & Serravalle’.1 For numerous sketches in and around Belluno to the north-west, see under folio 66 verso (D32392), and for Serravalle, now part of Vittorio Veneto to the south, under folio 75 verso (D32410). Folio 73 verso (D32406) may show Lago Morta, a little way along the road south.
A long sequence of sketches, mostly characterised as ‘Mountains’ by Finberg (with occasional identifications and transcriptions of the place names marked by the artist), lies between folios 7 recto and 76 recto (D32275–D32411).2 See the sketchbook’s Introduction for the likely overall route between Bregenz and Venice.3
