Drawn with the page turned horizontally, the main subject is a schematic outline of the Venice waterfront looking north from the Bacino, with the buildings reduced to simplified blocks: the Zecca (Mint) and Libreria Sansoviniana on the left with the campanile of San Marco (St Mark’s) beyond, the opening of the Piazzetta, and the Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace) at the centre. Compare the more detailed aspects of the scene on folios 3 verso and 4 recto (D31796–D31797).
Above is a study of moored boats on the waterfront, crossing the gutter onto folio 13 verso opposite (D31816).
