This very lightly rendered sketch was made with the page turned horizontally. It possibly shows the view south along the narrow Rio della Salute off the Grand Canal, with the heavily articulated Baroque church of Santa Maria della Salute on the left, and verticals on the right hinting at the slender facets of the polygonal Gothic apse of the former monastery church of San Gregorio. Both are seen in their wider setting on the recto (D31904).
Compare the atmospheric contemporary watercolour showing The North-Western Façade of Santa Maria della Salute, Seen from the Grand Canal (National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh),1 associated with the dispersed ‘Storm’ sketchbook (see the Introduction to the 1840 Grand Canal and Giudecca book; Tate; Turner Bequest CCCXV).
