There are three views here, one above the other. With the page inverted, the top two focus on the square keep of the ruined Bertholdstein castle on the south bank of the River Danube at Hollenburg, just east of Krems (the two now being constituted as Krems-Hollenburg); see also the 1833 Salzburg and Danube sketchbook (Tate D30285–D30286; Turner Bequest CCC 79a–80).
Below, the other way up, is Schloss Wallsee, on the south bank at Wallsee-Sindelburg, many miles upriver towards Linz; for other views in this book and those made in 1833, see under folio 8 verso (D30017). Although Turner’s route upriver was straightforward, his somewhat haphazard use of this book to record it was not.
