Unusually in this sketchbook (as opposed to using single pages horizontally), Turner has worked across a double-page spread for two views, both being continued on folio 56 recto opposite (D30108), under which the subjects, identified by Cecilia Powell,1 are discussed; they are out of sequence with those on adjacent pages, coming from a later stage of this phase of the tour, as set out in the sketchbook’s Introduction.
At the top here is the south front of Schloss Persenbeug, set above the River Danube, flowing to the right in the foreground; the continuation opposite includes a barge. Below, the castle is seen from upriver, looking south-east to Ybbs on the opposite bank on the other page.
