This sketch is part of a panorama of Heidelberg Castle’s western terrace, continued on Tate D29817; Turner Bequest CCXCVIII 2a.1 In this section the ruins of the Great Tower can be seen at left and the ornate gable of the Friedrichsbau, a seventeeth-century residence built by Elector Frederick IV, is visible towards right.2
