J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

Here Turner depicts the view from Heidelberg Castle’s Stückgarten, a former bulwark transformed into a pleasure garden by Elector Frederick V (1596–1632) for his wife Elizabeth Stuart. Sculptures in the Stückgarten can be seen at right. Beyond is the Church of the Holy Spirit and the old bridge crossing the Neckar. ‘6’ is inscribed under the one of the arches of the bridge.
