A wide-angled view of Heidelberg Castle and town from the east is depicted in two instalments, the hillside around the Castle having been rendered at rear with what appear to be the same figures as are recorded in Tate D29830; Turner Bequest CCXCVIII 9. Walls fortifying the Castle can be seen at top left. The hill slopes steeply towards Heidelberg town, marked out by a cluster of buildings and the steeple of the Church of the Holy Spirit. The old bridge crossing the Neckar is visible at right. ‘[?Tower]’ appears to have been inscribed at centre, towards left.
