Heidelberg Castle is depicted from the east, with the steeple of the Church of the Holy Spirit, and the old bridge crossing the Neckar visible towards bottom right. The eastern façade of the Castle is shown, including, from left to right, the Gate Tower, the Broken Tower and Apothecary’s Tower, and the octagonal Bell Tower. Figures in the foreground can be seen taking in the view.
Studies of the Castle from the east recorded in this sketchbook (Tate D29829–D29837; Turner Bequest CCXCVIII 8a–12a) and in the later Spires and Heidelberg sketchbook (Tate D29799; Turner Bequest CCXCVII 14a) were developed into a watercolour of 1844 (Tate D35229; Turner CCCLII 9).
