Heidelberg is depicted from the east, with the Castle at left, and the town, the Church of the Holy Spirit and the old bridge crossing the Neckar visible at right. The eastern façade of the Castle is shown, including from left to right, the Gate Tower, the Broken Tower and Apothecary’s Tower, and the octagonal Bell Tower. A continuation of fortified hillside is rendered in the sky at top right.
Studies of the Castle from the east recorded in this sketchbook (Tate D29829–D29836; Turner Bequest CCXCVIII 8a–12) and in the later Spires and Heidelberg sketchbook (Tate D29799; Turner Bequest CCXCVII 14a) were developed into a watercolour of 1844 (Tate D35229; Turner CCCLII 9).
