This study of Heidelberg is part of a two-page prospect continued from the folio opposite (Tate D29840; Turner Bequest CCXCVIII 14). Taken from Neuenheim, the view depicted here shows the bridge over the Neckar with its gate towers, part of Heidelberg Castle at top left, and the Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche) at right. Further buildings to the west of the Heiliggeistkirche are rendered parallel to the gutter of the sketchbook (these sketches extend slightly onto the folio opposite, Tate D29842; Turner Bequest CCXCVIII 15). Turner consulted this view and Tate D29843; Turner Bequest CCXCVIII 15a to produce a finished watercolour design engraved and published in 1846 for Thomas Abel Prior as Heidelberg from the Opposite Bank of the Neckar (Tate impression T05190).
