The principal sketch shows Stein an der Donau from the banks of the Danube, with the town hall at centre and the Frauenbergkirche and Church of St Nicholas behind it (see Tate D30140; Turner Bequest CCC 6). ‘Golden Traube’ (golden ‘grape’), inscribed at top left, probably refers to an inn.
Below Turner depicts the view looking across the Danube to Mautern, taken from outside the town walls of Stein. This view continues onto the folio opposite (Tate D30260; Turner Bequest CCC 66).
Technical notes:
Water stains present, presumably owing to the Tate Gallery flood of 1928.
