This is one of a large group of separate studies, most of which were made in gouache on blue paper, associated with a visit to Petworth House in West Sussex, the home of the third Earl of Egremont. For more information, see the Introduction to this section.
Ian Warrell has noted that oxen were a distinctive feature of Petworth, with the third earl keeping them to pull ploughs and farm wagons.1 Here Turner records the cattle harnessed to a cart, a motif that is repeated elsewhere as part of another Petworth scene, this time with a brilliant sunset (Mint Museum, Charlotte, North Carolina).
