The lower half of the page contains two studies of the Donzère parade, which Turner executed with the sketchbook inverted. He passed these steep limestone cliffs at a late stage of his two-day boat journey from Lyon to Avignon, using hatched and dotted lines to trace their contours. Both cliff profiles extend onto folio 27 verso opposite (D21043), and further studies of this subject can be seen on folios 27 recto and 28 verso (D21042, D21045).
The unrelated sketch at the top of the page appears to depict the Romanesque church of Bourg-Saint-Andéol, located south of the Donzère parade on the right bank of the Rhône. With heavier lines suggesting the use of a blunt pencil, Turner detailed the church’s distinctive octagonal lantern tower and spire. His scrawled inscription above may be a misspelling of ‘Andéol’, or a mistaken identification of ‘Bagnols-sur-Cèze’, a town located further south and inland. Further views of Bourg-Saint-Andéol appear on folios 28 verso, 30 verso and 32 recto (D21045, D21049–D21050; Turner Bequest CCXXX 31).
